*********WFB Disaster Response**********
Weld Food Bank’s primary mission is to support the emergency response and ongoing activities of our partner agencies. As always we are offering food to our non-profit agency partners in affected towns as they seek to aid victims in their communities as well as others in need of food and services.
However, in response to the tornadoes experienced last month in Northern Colorado, we have also provided food boxes for disaster victims and offered food distributions on site. We are reassessing food needs on a daily basis in each community which suffered damages and will respond as we see the need.
Recap of Disaster Related Efforts:
Thursday, May 22 – Tornado struck Weld County. Weld Food Bank delivered more than 2,200 pounds of food and water to the American Red Cross Shelter in the Windsor Community Center.
Friday, May 23 – Weld Food Bank distributed emergency food boxes to 425 Windsor residents at the Windsor Community Center. An appeal for volunteers brought 54 community volunteers who filled 1200 emergency food boxes and sorted 6000 pounds of food.
Saturday, May 24 - Weld Food Bank opened for special hours to accept both food and cash donations and work to prepare food for distribution to victims, filling emergency food boxes and sorting donated foods.
Monday, May 26 - In collaboration with King Soopers, Weld Food Bank distributed more than 16,400 pounds of food to 172 Windsor households who had experienced damage last Thursday. King Soopers provided an assortment of non-perishable goods including soups, cereal, snacks, and breads for distribution to tornado victims. Weld Food Bank provided 41 cases of water, 720 dozen eggs, and 1000 pounds of produce for distribution. Many thanks also to Sara Lee, Mission Tortilla, Coke and Agland for their generous donations.
Wednesday, May 28 – Weld Food Bank distributed emergency food boxes, bread, soups and assorted donations of cereals, canned goods, and non-food items to Windsor residents affected by last week’s tornado.
Friday, May 30 – WFB was on-site in Gilcrest to distribute emergency food boxes, bread, eggs, water and assorted donated goods to those affected by tornadoes in the communities of Gilcrest, Platteville, Milliken, and Johnstown.
Friday, June 6 – WFB once again used its large refrigerator trucks to distribute bread, eggs, honey-baked hams, water and food boxes filled with non-perishable items to disaster victims in Windsor. While there, the food bank also delivered cereals, snack items and non-perishable food to Windmill Daycare’s temporary post-disaster location at Skyview Elementary School. Windmill Daycare suffered a direct “hit” by the tornado on May 22. This is the last anticipated direct food distribution as we will now focus primarily on our primary mission to support our partner agencies. Food boxes and help for tornado victims will continue to be available at the warehouse at 1108 H Street in Greeley.
August 14th – In less than two hours, WFB distributed 6,500 pounds of fresh produce, canned goods, cereals and hams to 251 individuals during another tornado relief food distribution in Windsor. Recipients were asked to qualify through area agencies as having been impacted by the storm, or bring their FEMA paperwork, to receive food and supplies meant to assist them in recovery. Due to extremely severe weather, we were forced to leave earlier than anticipated, but another food distribution will be scheduled to serve those unable to attend.
On behalf of our donors, the community and many volunteers, Weld Food Bank hopes this food has helped in some small way.
August 28th – More than 12,000 pounds of fresh produce, meats and non-perishable items were distributed to another 83 tornado-impacted families in Windsor. Qualifying recipients were asked to bring vouchers from area agencies as having been impacted by the storm, or bring their FEMA paperwork. Weld Food Bank continues to support its partner agencies in distributing food to those impacted by the storm but will continue assessing the ongoing need for these larger distributions as long as necessary.
